It's an open secret that many compact cameras are produced by OEMs - companies that produce large numbers of products that are then sold under other brand names. Tamron, for example, builds lens/sensor            modules that form the basis of many compacts. Companies such as Asia Optical and Sanyo DI Solutions build compacts that are then sold under a range of brand names. The practice isn't confined to compacts,               though, with distinctly Tamron-esque lenses appearing in big brands' lineups, for example. But we were still surprised to read about Sigma's latest patent for a 75mm F1.8 prime lens...

The patent, highlighted on the egami blog, shows the details of a 75mm F1.8 prime, specifically designed with a lightweight internal focus element to allow fast focusing for stills and movies. That's a combination of features that sounded somewhat familiar.

Ricoh has announced the Ricoh HZ15, a 15x compact superzoom that will only be sold in Europe. Though it isn't sold under the Pentax name, it bears a striking resemblance to Optio compacts of recent years. It features a 16 megapixel CCD sensor, 24-360mm equivalent zoom lens, 720p HD video and sensor-shift 'SR' shake reduction (terminology definitely borrowed from Pentax cameras). Though not a remarkable compact superzoom, it provides some idea of Ricoh's intentions for the brand going forward and what role Pentax plays in it.

THE RINGFLASH ADAPTER FOR ALL PORTABLE FLASH UNITS

RayFlash has announced a new universal ringflash adapter for DSLRs. Designed to clamp on to your own hotshoe flash, it utilizes the light from your existing flash unit and bends it through the circular structure around the lens of a DSLR. It's offered in two sizes - one fits most DSLRs (and the Olympus E-M5 O-MD) and another is configured with a longer neck for cameras with a higher body. RayFlash calls it 'small and light-weight,' (each unit indeed weighs 540g) and claims that it doesn't require any other fittings to support it.

The previous RayFlash adapter used a slightly different design and was only compatible with certain Nikon and Canon flash units. The newly designed universal adapter accommodates a wider range of flash units with its clamping mechanism, though some may require the use of a rubber O-Ring for a proper fit.
